Dual Recovery
Recognizing
that a gap existed in MA community peer supports for those who
have both and addiction and mental illness, members of MCC
clubhouses discovered Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA) and tokk
action to bring DRA to Massachusetts. DRA is a member-led,
twelve step fellowship that supports individuals recovering from
mental illness and alcohol and other drug addictions.
Seven years ago the MCC partnered with the Massachusetts
Behavior Health Partnership (MBHP) to expand dual recovery
meetings. The MBHP now funds the MCC to provide dual
recovery support, education, technical assistance and outreach
to consumers who are affiliated with clubhouses in
Massachusetts. The success has been significant and there
are now 37 DRA groups and substance awareness meetings scheduled
regularly in Massachusetts.

The MCC Dual Recovery Committee
holds meetings for leaders, participants and supporters of these
groups to receive extra education and support, to build
relationships, and to enhance and enrich their groups. In
addition, each month, members and staff from the MCC Dual
Recovery Committee provide outreach to each meeting in the form
of phone calls and visits upon request. Each year, the
project organizes a Dual Recovery Retreat for those taking
leadership in their dual recovery meetings. The Retreat is
an opportunity to train peers leaders, to receive peer support,
and to provide technical assistance to strengthen existing
meetings and develop new ones. Last year, 81
individuals from 20 clubhouses and organizations attended the
Retreat in Holyoke, MA. Retreat attendees walked away with
new ideas as well as new friends.
